The dead sea is a salt lake bordered by Jordan and Palestine. The lake&#8217;s surface is 430.5 metres below sea level, making its shores the lowest land-based elevation on Earth. It is known for its high salinity and the therapeutic effect of its salts. It is one of the most important tourist attractions in Jordan.<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theworldinstamps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Jordan-1971-YT-688.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theworldinstamps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Jordan-1971-YT-688.jpg?resize=517%2C400\" alt=\"Dead Sea - Jordan 1971\" width=\"517\" height=\"400\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p><div>Dead Sea &#8211; Jordan 1971<\/div><h2>The city of Petra<\/h2><p>The second stamp represents the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Petra\">archaeological and historical city of Petra<\/a>. It is located in the Ma&#8217;an Governorate in the south of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. It is famous for its rock-cut architecture and ancient aqueduct system. It was called the &#8220;Pink City&#8221; due to the colours of its rocks.<br \/>Petra was founded approximately in 312 BC as the capital of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nabataeans\">the Nabataean kingdom<\/a>. It assumed a prominent position for many years, as it was located on the Silk Road, between civilizations of Mesopotamia,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Palestine_(region)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Palestine<\/a>, and Egypt.<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theworldinstamps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Jordan-1971-YT-689.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theworldinstamps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Jordan-1971-YT-689.jpg?resize=516%2C400\" alt=\"Ed-Deir Petra - Jordan 1971\" width=\"516\" height=\"400\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>\u00a0<\/p><p>Ed-Deir Petra &#8211; Jordan 1971<\/p><h2>The Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem\u00a0<\/h2><p>The third stamp represents the Via Dolorosa (translated as &#8220;Way of Suffering&#8221;) in the old city of Jerusalem. It is a processional route in the\u00a0<a title=\"Old City of Jerusalem\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Old_City_of_Jerusalem\">Old City of Jerusalem<\/a>. It represents the path that\u00a0Jesus\u00a0would have taken, forced by the Roman soldiers, on the way to his\u00a0crucifixion. It is a 600 meters road between the old citadel of Jerusalem and the current location of the <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Church_of_the_Holy_Sepulchre\">Church of the Holy Sepulchre.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p><p>Eastern part of Jerusalem was part of the Jordanian territory from 1951 until its occupation by the Israeli army in 1967. The Jordan river, also known as\u00a0<i>Nahr Al Sharieat,<\/i> is a 251-kilometre-long river that flows roughly north to south through the Lake of Tiberias and on to the\u00a0<a title=\"Dead Sea\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dead_Sea\">Dead Sea<\/a>. It is fed by the Hasbani River coming from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lebanon\">Lebanon<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Banias River flowing from the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Golan_Heights\">Syrian Golan Heights<\/a>. These two cities are in the Palestinian territories in the west bank. This territory was annexed as part of the Hashemite kingdom of Jordan in 1951.
