This set was issued to celebrate the end of the\u00a0Suez war (also called: the tripartite aggression).<\/span><\/p><p>In 1956, Egypt announced the decision to nationalize the Suez Canal on July 26, 1956. The Suez canal is an artificial waterway of strategic importance, linking\u00a0<a style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mediterranean_Sea\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Mediterranean Sea<\/a>\u00a0with\u00a0<a style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Red_Sea\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Red Sea<\/a>. Since its digging in Egypt in 1869, it was under the control of a foreign-owned Company.<\/p><p>Following <a href=\"https:\/\/theworldinstamps.com\/?p=4558\">the nationalization of the Canal<\/a>, Great Britain, France and Israel attacked Egypt in October 1956. The war aimed to take the control of the Canal and weaken the regime of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theworldinstamps.com\/?p=2938\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Egyptian president Nasser<\/a>. Later, with the weakening of the Egyptian state, they established a kingdom with Avaris as capital. This kingdom is considered to be the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fifteenth_Dynasty_of_Egypt\">Fifteenth Dynasty<\/a>. This kingdom did not control all Egypt. This enabled the Muslims to regain full sovereignty over Jerusalem and some of the Crusaders\u2019 strongholds in the Levant.<\/p><p>The European powers became convinced that the main obstacle to their plans in the holy land was Egypt. in 1245,\u00a0<span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.5px;\">Pope Innocent IV gave his full support to\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Crusades\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Seventh Crusade<\/a><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.5px;\">\u00a0being prepared by Louis IX, King of France.<\/span><\/p><h3><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.5px;\">The seventh Crusade<\/span><\/h3><p><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.5px;\">King Louis IX and two of his brothers,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles_of_Anjou\">Charles d&#8217;Anjou<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robert_of_Artois\">Robert d&#8217;Artois<\/a>, led the crusaders&#8217;s forces. They were joined later by the king&#8217;s third brother\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alphonse,_Count_of_Poitiers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alphonse of Poitiers<\/a>. These forces were mainly french with an English contingent led by <a title=\"William II Longesp\u00e9e\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_II_Longesp%C3%A9e\">William of Salisbury.<\/a><\/p><p>After a first important victory were they controlled the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Damietta\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">port of Damietta<\/a>, in June 1249, the crusaders were unable to progress in Egypt. In Februray 1250, the crusaders progressed towards the city of Mansourah. But the attacking forces fell into a trap and most of them were decimated, including the King&#8217;s brother\u00a0<a style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robert_of_Artois\">Robert d&#8217;Artois<\/a>, and the English commander\u00a0<a style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\" title=\"William II Longesp\u00e9e\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_II_Longesp%C3%A9e\">William of Salisbury.<\/a><\/p><p>After two months long seige, the crusaders tried to retreat to the Damietta, but were attacked by Egyptian forces. It commemorates\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Battle_of_Hattin\">the battle of Hattin,<\/a>\u00a0that occurred in July 1187 AD, where <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Saladin\">Saladin<\/a> achieved a crushing victory over the Crusader armies.\u00a0<\/div><div style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1099 AD, areas in today Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, and Jerusalem in particular were occupied by the Crusaders in the first crusade.\u00a0<\/div><div style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Crusaders and knights had established themselves as princes and kings on those areas and established the <a style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\" title=\"Kingdom of Jerusalem\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kingdom_of_Jerusalem\">Kingdom of Jerusalem<\/a>. This occupation lasted for about a century, that has seen a succession of truces and wars. The Islamic\u00a0surrounding powers never gave-up their will to liberate the country from occupation.<\/div><div style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/div><div style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The direct cause of this battle were attacks committed by in 1187 by <a style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Raynald_of_Ch%C3%A2tillon\">Raynald of Ch\u00e2tillon<\/a>,\u00a0the\u00a0<a style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\" title=\"Lord of Oultrejordain\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lord_of_Oultrejordain\">Lord of Oultrejordain<\/a>, raided a caravan of Muslim merchants while the truce with Saladin was still in place. Saladin asked <a style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\" title=\"Guy of Lusignan\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Guy_of_Lusignan\">Guy of Lusignan<\/a>, the <a style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\" title=\"King of Jerusalem\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/King_of_Jerusalem\">king of Jerusalem<\/a> to compensate for the goods and punish his Lord for the truce violation. The king&#8217;s refusal of these demands was a reason for the outbreak of war that ended by the battle od Hittin, where the army of Saladdin crushed the crusaders&#8217; army. It expanded rapidly towards central and western Asia and Europe. In few decades, Mongols extended their control over all central Asia and Persia.<\/p><p>After several attacks on Syrian cities starting in 1244,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Siege_of_Baghdad_(1258)\">the Mongols besieged Baghdad, occupied and sacked it in 1958<\/a>. Damascus had a similar fate sometime later. After these victories, the Mongols sent envoys to Cairo demanding\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mamluk\">the Mamluks,<\/a>\u00a0who ruled over Egypt, to surrender.\u00a0<\/p><p>In anticipation of a Mongol invasion,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Qutuz\">the Mamluk Sultan of Egypt, Saif ad-Din Qutuz<\/a>, prepared an army and entered into Palestine. The Egyptian Mamluk and Mongol armies clashed in a locality in the south of the galilee called Ain Jalut.
