To provide the necessary electricity, Egypt decided to build the high dam on the Nile near the city of Aswan in the south of the country. But the lake of the dam, was going to extend for hundreds of kilometers in Egyptian Nubia and Sudanese Nubia.\u00a0<\/p><figure id=\"attachment_6105\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6105\" style=\"width: 613px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theworldinstamps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Morocco-YT-461.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theworldinstamps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Morocco-YT-461.jpg?resize=613%2C430\" alt=\"\" width=\"613\" height=\"430\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6105\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">UNESCO &#8211; Nubia Monuments Saving &#8211; Morocco 1963 &#8211; YT461<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The Dam&#8217;s lake threatened to engulf a large number of pharaonic\u00a0monuments, including 17 temples. The UNESCO lauched a very ambitious project to\u00a0 dismantle the temples stone by stone and rebuild them in other places, away from the waters of Lake Dam.\u00a0<\/p><figure id=\"attachment_6107\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6107\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a style=\"background-color: #ffffff; letter-spacing: normal;\" href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theworldinstamps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Morocco-YT-463.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theworldinstamps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Morocco-YT-463.jpg?resize=610%2C426\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"426\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6107\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: normal;\">\u00a0UNESCO &#8211; Nubia Monuments Saving &#8211;\u00a0<\/span>Morocco 1963 &#8211;\u00a0<span style=\"letter-spacing: normal;\">YT463<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure><p>In 1960,\u00a0<a style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.unesco.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UNESCO, the United Nations Education Sciences and Culture Organization<\/a>, launched an international campaign to save the monuments of Nubia. The project aimed to dismantle the temples stone by stone and rebuild them in other places, away from the waters of Lake Dam. Thirty countries were involved in providing scientific expertise and material resources for this giant project.<\/p><p>To provide the necessary financial means for this project, thirty countries have issued commemorative postage stamps with the words \u201csave the monuments of Nubia\u201d. The generated income was used to fund the project. But four\u00a0temples were gifted to other countries\u00a0in recognition of their efforts to preserve the Egyptian monuments.\u00a0<\/p><h3><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.5px; font-size: 16px;\">Temple of Taffeh donated to Netherlands<\/span><\/h3><div><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.5px;\">The temple of Taffeh was built of sandstone between 25 BCE and 14 CE during the rule of the Roman emperor Augustus. It was part of the Roman fortress known as Taphis and measures 6.5 by 8 metres. It was offered to Netherlans.\u00a0 It was reconstructed in a new stall in the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.museum.nl\/en\/rijksmuseum-van-oudheden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden, Netherlands<\/a><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.5px;\">\u00a0in 1971.\u00a0<\/span><\/div><h3><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.5px; font-size: 16px;\">Temple of Ellesyia donated to Italy<\/span><\/h3><div><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.5px;\">The Temple of Ellesyia, is an ancient Egyptian rocky temple built during the 18th dynasty by the Pharaoh Tuhutmus III. It was dedicated to the deities Amun, Horus and Satis. After the rescue compaign, the temple was offered as a gift to Italy and moved to the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/museoegizio.it\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Museo Gizio (Egyptian Museum)\u00a0\u00a0in Turino &#8211; Italy<\/a><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.5px;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/div><div><h3><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.5px; font-size: 16px;\">Temple of Debod donated to Spain<\/span><\/h3><\/div><div><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.5px;\">The temple of Debod is a small Egyptian temple, of 12 by 15 meters, dating back to the 2nd century BC. It was first built as a small single-room chapel dedicated to the god Amun. It was opened to the public in 1972.<\/span><\/div><div><h3><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.5px; font-size: 16px;\">Temple of Denur donated to the USA<\/span><\/h3><\/div><div>The Temple of Dendur is an ancient Egyptian temple built by the Roman governor of Egypt, Petronius, around 15 B.C., as one of many Egyptian temples commissioned by the emperor Augustus.
