Each year, Morocco celebrates its independence from the French and Spanish occupation on the 18th of November.<\/p><h2>Occupation and division <span style=\"text-align: var(--text-align);\">of Morocco:<\/span><\/h2><figure id=\"attachment_9080\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9080\" style=\"width: 212px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a style=\"text-align: var(--text-align); background-color: #ffffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theworldinstamps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Morocco-1957-YT-374.png?ssl=1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theworldinstamps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Morocco-1957-YT-374.png?resize=212%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"First anniversary of the indepednance of Morocco - 1st stamp\" width=\"212\" height=\"300\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9080\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"text-align: var(--text-align);\"> First anniversary of the independence of Morocco &#8211; YT-374<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure><p>In the middle of the 19th century, Morocco\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theworldinstamps.com\/?p=3342\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lost ceveral important battles<\/a> with the French and Spanish troops. This led to a surge in public debts and the decline of the state&#8217;s authority over its lands and population. The decline in the state&#8217;s authority increased the ambitions of the competing colonial European powers to occupy Morocco.\u00a0<\/p><p>In march 1912, Morocco signed a treaty with France, that established\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/French_protectorate_in_Morocco\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the French protectorate in Morocco<\/a>. In November of the same year, a treaty between France and Spain established the Spanish protectorate. This protectorate spanned over the north of Morocco,<a href=\"https:\/\/theworldinstamps.com\/?p=3342\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tarfaya (called Cape Juby), Ifni<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0the Moroccan Southern Sahara.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>In 1924, France, Spain and the United Kingdom signed a treaty to create an international around the city of Tangiers. This zone was administred by the european consuls, USA and the Sultan of Morocco.<\/p><h2><span style=\"text-align: var(--text-align);\">Resistance of the Moroccan people<\/span><\/h2><p><span style=\"text-align: var(--text-align);\">Even before the beginning of occupation, Moroccans showed a fierce resistance to the increasing\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: Roboto; letter-spacing: 0.4pt;\">European\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"text-align: var(--text-align);\">influence over their country. One of the earliest revolts was <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bombardment_of_Casablanca\">the revolt of Casablanca in 1907<\/a> in which the population was protesting <\/span><span style=\"text-align: var(--text-align);\">the presence of French agents controlling customs dutie.<\/span>\u00a0In addition, the population protested against the start of intense, alienating, and clearly colonial constructions.<\/p><figure id=\"attachment_9081\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9081\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a style=\"text-align: var(--text-align); background-color: #ffffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theworldinstamps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Morocco-1957-YT-375.png?ssl=1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theworldinstamps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Morocco-1957-YT-375.png?resize=210%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"First anniversary of the indepednance of Morocco - 2nd stamp\" width=\"210\" height=\"300\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9081\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"text-align: var(--text-align);\"> First anniversary of the independence of Morocco &#8211; YT-375<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure><p><span style=\"text-align: var(--text-align);\">In the north, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mohammed_Ameziane\">the Mujahid Muhammed Amziane<\/a> revolted in the countryside in 1909 against the harbingers of the Spanish protection.\u00a0<\/span>He conducted many battles against the Spanish troops, causing them heavy losses. <span style=\"text-align: var(--text-align);\">His resistance continued until his death in 1912. The following year, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jebala_people\">Jebala region<\/a> revolted, especially between Chaouen and Tetouan.<\/span><\/p><p>A decade later, in 1920,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Abd_el-Krim\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Muhammad ibn Abd al-Karim al-Khattabi<\/a>\u00a0started a resistance movement against French and Spanish occupations in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rif\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">northern Rif region<\/a>.<\/p><p>In the south,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ma_al-%27Aynayn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shaikh\u00a0Mohamed Mustafa Ma al-&#8216;Aynayn<\/a>, played an imminent role\u00a0<span style=\"text-align: var(--text-align);\">against the french invasion of Mauritania and Mali. He\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"text-align: var(--text-align);\">led the resistance from the city of\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"text-align: var(--text-align); background-color: #ffffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Smara\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Smara\u00a0<\/a><span style=\"text-align: var(--text-align);\">in what was then the Spanish Sahara starting from 1904 . He proclaimed that the trab al-beidan (a desert area that includes today&#8217;s Mauritania, southern Morocco, Western Sahara and large swaths of northern Mali and southern-western Algeria) was under Moroccan Sultan&#8217;s rule.\u00a0<\/span>Shaikh Ma al-&#8216;Aynayn was later defeated by the French troops and died in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tiznit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tiznit\u00a0<\/a>south of Agadir in 1910.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>Other resistance movements in different parts of the country prevented France from extending its control over all of Morocco until 1934. But\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: Roboto; letter-spacing: 0.4pt;\">immediately\u00a0<\/span>after the end of second world war, Moroccans resumed their demand of independence.<\/p><h2><span style=\"text-align: var(--text-align);\">The revolution of the King and the People<\/span><\/h2><figure id=\"attachment_3347\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3347\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a style=\"text-align: var(--text-align); background-color: #ffffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theworldinstamps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/1024px-Morocco_Protectorate.svg.png?ssl=1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theworldinstamps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/1024px-Morocco_Protectorate.svg.png?resize=400%2C383&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Morocco subdivisions\" width=\"400\" height=\"383\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3347\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"text-align: var(--text-align);\"> Morocco subdivisions during the French and Spanish protectorates (*)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure><p>In January 1944, Moroccan dignitaries submitted a\u00a0<span style=\"text-align: var(--text-align);\">document<\/span><span style=\"text-align: var(--text-align);\">\u00a0 to the French authorities\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"text-align: var(--text-align);\">demanding the end of the protection of Morocco and the restoration of its territorial integrity and full national sovereignty. On April 9, 1947, <a href=\"https:\/\/theworldinstamps.com\/?p=5643\">Sultan Mohammed V<\/a> visited the city of Tangiers, where he delivered the Tangiers speech, which led to the escalation of the resistance to end the occupation. On August 20, 1953, Mohammed V and the royal family were exiled to Madagascar, and what is known as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Revolution_of_the_King_and_the_People\">the revolution of the King and the People<\/a> erupted in Morocco. The revolution continued until the return of the Sultan from exile and the obtention of the independence of Morocco in 1956.<\/span><\/p><h2><span style=\"text-align: var(--text-align);\">Independence and reunification of Morocco<\/span><\/h2><div><figure id=\"attachment_9078\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9078\" style=\"width: 211px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a style=\"text-align: var(--text-align); background-color: #ffffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theworldinstamps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Morocco-1957-YT-376.png?ssl=1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theworldinstamps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Morocco-1957-YT-376.png?resize=211%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"First anniversary of the indepednance of Morocco - 3rd stamp\" width=\"211\" height=\"300\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9078\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"text-align: var(--text-align);\"> First anniversary of the independence of Morocco &#8211; YT-376<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure><span style=\"text-align: var(--text-align);\">On November 16, 1955, Mohammed V and the royal family returned from exile. On March 2, 1956, the French government recognized the independence of the Kingdom of Morocco in the joint declaration signed between Mohammed V and the French government. A month later, on April 7, 1956, Morocco signed an agreement with Spain ending the spanish protectorate in the north. On the 22nd of the same month, Morocco joined the United Nations.<\/span><br \/>Since its independence Morocco claimed sovereignty over many other territories that were still under foreign control.<br \/>Morocco regained Tarfaya (Cape Juby) in 1958,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theworldinstamps.com\/?p=3342\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ifni territory<\/a>\u00a0in 1969,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Saguia_el-Hamra\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Saguia el-Hamra<\/a>\u00a0in 1975 and Oued Edhahab (Rio de Oro) in 1979.<br \/><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.5px;\">Morocco continues to claim sovereignty over the Spanish controlled territories of Ceuta, Melila and the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"text-align: var(--text-align); letter-spacing: 0.5px;\">Chafarinas Islands.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"text-align: var(--text-align); letter-spacing: 0.5px;\">The independence of Morocco was offcially in March 2, 1956, but the country decided to celebrate the independence day on th 18th of November. This date commemorates the intronization of king Mohammad V.<\/span><span style=\"text-align: var(--text-align); letter-spacing: 0.5px;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div><h2>Particularities about the stamps of the 1st anniversary of the independence of Morocco<\/h2><div>The Moroccan post issued the stamps above in two versions. One in the former French protectorate zone and the other in the former Spanish protectorate zone in the north of the country.<\/div><div>The version issued in the north of the country was labelled in Spanish &#8220;Marruecos&#8221; and had face values in Spanish currency. The stamps had the values of 80 centimos, 1 and 3 Pesetas.<\/div><div>In name of the country on the stamps was &#8220;Al Maghrib Al Aqsa&#8221; that can be translated as the &#8220;Far Maghrib&#8221;. After the unification of the postal services in the two former protectorate zones in 1958, the country name changed to become &#8220;Kingdom of
