The University of Jordan in a Postage Stamp: 2009
The Jordan University is the oldest and largest universty in Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. It is one of the most prestegious universities in Jordan and the Arab world.
The establishment
The establishment of the Jordan University was decided by late King Hussein Ibn Talal (1935-1999) in Septembre 1962, and it effectively opened its doors in April 1965. The university had only 8 faculty members and was composed of one college only, the college of Arts. The college of Science was established later the same year.
The Jordan university is composed today of 24 schools in various disciplines that offer more than 250 programs.
The Jordan university offers 91 bachelors in different programs in Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing, Rehabilitation Science, Science, Agriculture, Engineering, Information Technology, Art, Business Administration, Sharia’a, Educational Sciences, law, Physical Education, Arts and Design, International Studies, Foreign Languages, Archaeology and Tourism. In addition, the university offers 115 master programs and 41 doctoral Programs.
The university currently counts 49,000 students from 120 nationalities and more than 1,500 academic staff. Since its foundation, the number of UJ graduates have exceeded 200,000 graduates.
International University Rankings
The university has been recognized the quality of its teaching and research. In 2021, it was ranked as the first university in Jordan for the fifth consecutive year by QS World University Rankings. It was ranked in the top 601 – 650 universities globally.
According to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2020, The university of Jordan has been ranked among the 201-250 top universities in the world in the field of computer science and among 401-500 top universities in the world in the field of engineering and technology.
The Jordanian post issued in 2009 a set of ten stamps representing the jordanian universities existing at that time. This stamp features the emblem of the Jordan University.
