On July 14, 1958, a group of Iraqi army officers carried out a military coup. This action ended the monarchy after 37 years of Hashemite rule in Baghdad. The new officers in power announced the establishment of the Republic of Iraq.
On October 14, 1958, the United Arab Republic issued a commemorative stamp entitled “A salute to the establishment of the Iraqi Republic.” The stamp was issued in the Egyptian and the Styrian part of the union. The Syrian version of the stamp had a value of 12.5 piasters. While version issuedin the Egyptian part of the union, had a value of 10 millimes.
